About the event

This 25-hour oil painting workshop offers students of all levels the opportunity to learn different oil painting techniques while exploring the use of a photograph as a reference to create a portrait in nature painting. During the class, students will be guided from initial steps like preparing their surface, to developing steps like the wipe-out drawing technique and Alla Prima painting. Emphasis will be placed on the depiction the portrait and varying natural textures. Students will also learn the basics of color theory, value structure, composition, and the use of different oil mediums. The workshop includes demonstrations as well as individual instruction. 

Day 1 (Sept 29): Preparation & Warm-up Day • Surface preparation with gesso and acrylic paint. • Introduction to using photographs as references. • Wipe-out technique exercise (second part of the class). • Value (light) structure. 

Day 2 (Sept 30): Full Day of Wipe-out Technique from Drawing to Detail • Introduction to transparent vs. opaque pigments. • Optical blacks and their use. • Different oil mediums and their uses. 

Day 3 (Oct 1): Full Day of General Direct Painting • Introduction to Alla Prima (direct painting). • Basic color theory. • Option to make final drawing changes. 

Day 4 (Oct 2): Full Day of General Direct Painting • Different oil mediums and their uses. • Introduction to Glazing (indirect painting) using the exercise from first class. • Warm vs. cool colors. • Volume structure to create form. 

Day 5 (Oct 3): Description of Textures with Focus on Details • Description of varying natural textures. • Soft vs. sharp edges. • Final details. Alonsa Guevara www.alonsaguevara.com alonsa@gmail.com 

SUPPLY LIST 

Canvas

  • Size around 12 x 16 or 16 x 20 inches. 

Brushes 

  • (this is a suggested list, you can bring the brushes that you feel comfortable with) 
  • Bristle brushes (Filbert or Brights) number 10, 16 
  • Synthetic soft brushes (Filbert or Brights) number 2, 4, 6, 8,12, 20 
  • Two Small Synthetic soft brush (Round) number 2 or smaller. 
  • One Flat Wash brush around 2 inches (to prepare the canvas). 

Oil Paints Gamblin recommended 

  • Titanium White 
  • Cadmium Yellow Medium
  • Hansa Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Red Light 
  • Quinacridone red 
  • Permanet Alizarin Crimson
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cerulean Blue
  • Phthalo green
  • Transparent Earth Orange
  • Burnt Umber 

Acrylic Paints 

  • Acrylic White Gesso 
  • Red acrylic paint (any cadmium red works) 
  • Yellow acrylic paint (any cadmium yellow works) 

Other Supplies 

  • Palette (wooden, paper or plexiglass) 
  • Palette knife small 
  • Linseed Oil 
  • Gamsol from Gamblin (odorless mineral spirit) 
  • Medium holder (small cup) 
  • Rags (available at hardware store) or old cotton shirts to use to wipe out 
  • Printed photos in color (I will email them closer to the workshop)
